Best Halloween Ever!
I'm not the first one to point this out, but ever since the summer, there's been a litany of parents lamenting "what the kids will miss out on" due to all the many restrictions and closures due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Here's the thing. Kids are highly adaptable and imaginative, they are able to find fun and adventure in some of the most mundane things. What kid hasn't found loads of fun and creative play from an appliance box!
So again, here we are in 2020, celebrating a Halloween like no other--at least not in a very long time.
And while many adults have been hand-wringing about what the kids will miss out on, what they themselves has missed out on his how much fun the kids are having!
Out myself on Halloween, I heard two different kids yell out, "Best Halloween Ever!"
While certainly this is very anecdotal evidence, it speaks to a broader point.
The kids have adapted!
And a shout out to many houses in my neighborhood for doing a great job on physically-distanced Halloween trick-or-treating!
But, let me get back to the point.
Edwin Friedman writes about the tendency of adults to focus on the children as a way of avoiding dealing with their own anxiety.
In other words, the next time you hear an adult pushing back on some restrictions by saying, "what the kids will miss out on," know that is most likely simply about the adults themselves being unable or unwilling to process their own emotions around the subject!
Trust me, the kids will be all right, I'm just not too sure about the adults.
